The world is full of natural mood-lifters and it’s time to put them to good use. Before you go out and refill your prescription for antidepressants, take a close look at the following seven things you can do to lift your spirits naturally.
Exercise.Exercise is an effective antidepressant. Did you know that exercise has been proven to raise happiness levels as much as an antidepressant such as Zoloft does? Not only that, but a study from 2000 also revealed that people who exercised regularly were less likely to relapse into depression than those who took antidepressants instead.
Listen to music.Before there were drugs like Prozac, there was music. Music makes your brain release serotonin and dopamine, a couple of brain chemicals that improve your mood and make you generally feel good. A 2010 study from Mexico concluded that listening to certain classical music, such as Mozart, can ease clinical depression.
Make mud pies.Go ahead and get dirty; you’ll feel better. Yes, really! In 2007, UK scientists discovered a type of friendly bacteria in soil that makes the brain release serotonin in a way very similar to antidepressants. The bacteria also helps improve one’s immune system, which directly affects depression or other mood disorders.
Meditation does wonders, especially when you’re depressed or anxious. Meditation silences the mind, releases stress, and helps you relax and dwell in positive thoughts. Before you reach for a synthetic antidepressant, practice some meditation techniques.
Look at something yellow.
Yellow inspires feelings of happiness, not only because it’s associated with things like sunshine and optimism, but also because it’s known to stimulate serotonin in the brain. You can paint your walls yellow or keep a yellow object nearby, so you’ll have something to look at next time you’re feeling blue.
Eat fish.Depression is often a result of insufficient levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the blood. Numerous studies have shown that taking fish oil or a placebo can improve your mental health over weeks. Fish contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, so you want to incorporate more fish into your diet whenever you feel a bit down.
Soak up the sun.The body produces Vitamin D from sunlight, and the more Vitamin D you have, the happier you are. Vitamin D can increase the levels of serotonin in the brain.
